The conference is the biggest and longest-running event dedicated to Latin music in the world. The awards are the culmination of the Billboard Latin Music Conference, now in its 26 th year and under the slogan “The Top Artists, The Top Trends, The Top Names in Music”. The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, as determined by the actual sales, radio airplay, streaming and social data that informs Billboard’s weekly charts during a one-year period from the issue dated Feb. Other multiple finalists include Marco Antonio Solis, Santana and Prince Royce, up for five awards the late Jenni Rivera, Calibre 50, Plan B and Wisin, up for four Ricardo Arjona, Camila, Chayanne, Alexis & Fido and Juan Gabriel competing for three each and Yandel, Shakira, Banda Los Recoditos, Ricky Martin, El Komander, Calle 13, Remmy Valenzuela, Juan Luis Guerra, Baby Rasta & Gringo up for two awards. Three out of the four finalists in the Artist of the year, new are regional Mexican– Kevin Ortiz, Banda Tierra Sagrada and Remmy Valenzuela–with J Balvin rounding up the quartet. Indeed, regional Mexican continues to be the most dynamic genre in terms of breaking new acts. Also claiming six nods each are regional Mexican powerhouses Julion Alvarez y Su Norteño Banda and Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga, who are up against each other in the Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Duo or Group category, which is completely dominated by regional Mexican music (Banda Los Recoditos and Calibre 50 are the other two finalists). In turn, Farruko, featured in Balvin’s “6 a.m.,” is also a six-time finalist, and although five of those nods came from the hit single, he’s a contender in the Latin Rhythm Albums artist of the year, solo category.
